The Legend of The Cowgirl Mermaid

The Cowgirl Mermaid is an idea, character, idol, aesthetic I use to represent the many dualities (often opposing) that make up who I am, how I feel, where I came from, and how I live.

I have been upcycling always, I can use whatever I have around me to make something new. After spending 10 years designing for brands in the fashion and outdoor industries I feel it a necessity to use discarded clothes and materials to create new ideas. I have found upcycling to again be my favorite process to create fashion and art.

I started this project in 2021 during the pandemic and haven't really stopped, it's been really fun to make up a brand. I feel like all the eras of my career so far are blended in here. I love making things with my hands, I thrift all the base clothing or it is donated to me from friends. I also buy from vintage sellers I find along the road. I upcycle all the pieces myself, I love sewing. I have found a new love for photography through this project by making lookbooks.

I am currently artist in residence at Midnight Lunch Gallery and Boutique located in Jackson. Wyoming and working out of the studio there. My textile sculpture The Cowgirl Mermaid is on display until mid Sept '23 in the gallery space.
